question ABT / 18 to 21 speed ...?
I have an old 18 speed ATB. Can I up grade to the rear with no seven-speed problem? Or is this a wheel speed September inappropriate? The reason I want to do is if I can put a wheel on the back with a early release. Problems / opinions? The bike is a Fila "Tome". I think it was sold in bike shops for years 90. Not your Walmart ****. Has a decent cro-moly frame. Shifter's / derailleurs look at least "input end ". Something like Shimano DS-60? I have no bike nearby watching. Front wheel / seat has a quick release. A search Web comes with a virgin. Perhaps this explains why no longer Fila bike. How would it hars to just rebuild the rear wheel so that it early release? The bike is like new wear wise. My lard-ass friend bought it and discovered the bike was too much effort.
Yes, you can go to 7 speed, but you will also need to upgrade your shifter back to a 7-speed. If you keep your controller in course you will be able to use only 6-speed, and you would not improve on your old configuration. Most likely, your hub is type freewheel. Cogsets freewheel thread on the hub body. 7-speed freewheels are still available. Shimano and Falcon continue to manufacture these. After installing the 7-speed freewheel, adjust the settings on your upper and lower rear derailleur to accommodate all the gear. Finally, you replace your chain. You'll need a narrow channel to the closest of a 7-speed. A freewheel Shimano will have a version of the string matching. Ask your local bike shop.
