Advice needed: What are the potential drawbacks to this bike?
Haven't owned a bike in 20 years and looking to get started again, at this point looking for a good entry lvl platform to get started again and since I know this sport can get very expensive, I'd rather not spend too much at first... think of it like this, "I wouldn't want to learn how to drive stick on a ferrari, rather get a hoopty that I can beat up get my skills up, then upgrade to a serious bike."
BTW, I am short 5'5" with a 29" inseem and I and my wife don't want to destroy my manhood if you get my drift.... so is this a decent size frame (is it considered medium)?

(detail info on parts and frame).
I won't be going nuts and finding any major drops or trails for this bike, my concerns are possibly parts used and weight of the bike, and bike frame size given my height any useful advice would be greatly appreciated.
Addressing your particular concerns:
1. Quality of components: Very poor. While Shimano manufactures some very nice components, those present on this bike aren't among them. The no-name disc and linear brakes probably wouldn't work worth a hoot if you did manage to get this thing rolling.
2. Bike weight: I guaranty it's heavy. Probably heavier than a cheap cruiser.
3. Frame size: It's too big. Consider yourself lucky for not having to further consider this item.
You're not going to develop skills on a department store bike. You'd probably hate the thing so much that you wouldn't want to ride it.
If you're really wanting to test the cycling waters, get something decent on discount/sale. Performance and other shops are having sales right now on bikes that are actually intended to be ridden, allow a choice of sizes, and won't get you seriously injured due to inferior components or assembly.
Buying online can save money, but you'll need to pay a few bucks to have the local bike shop due the final set up and adjustments. On a budget, here's a possibility:

This is something that you might actually enjoy riding and wouldn't need to spend a fortune for. Furthermore, you could still get a good chunk of your money out of it when you decide to upgrade to your Ferrari. As for the bike you linked, you would be lucky to get $50 out of it.
