Creaking noise in Carbon fiber bike?
I have a 1 year old Carbon Fiber Racing frame with Campy chorus components, including a carbon crank. My bike used to be dead quiet, but now on standing climbs I hear a clicking noise at the bottom of the pedal stroke. The noise happens at the bottom of both the LH and RH pedal. I don't think is coming from the cleats, it sounds like it is coming from the frame. Any ideas how to isolate the noise and quiet it?
These are ultratorque cranks, therefore it does not have the older style square taper spindle. Ultratorque uses a hollow body tubular spindle and it is a 2 piece design. There is no play in the cranks btw.
Yep...bottom bracket is the first place to look. Sometimes they loosen up with hard cranking.....often, all you need to do is remove, regrease, and torque them properly. On some carbon bikes, the bottom bracket shell can work loose from the bond....in that case, you're looking at a new frame (hopefully under warranty, even if it's out of the warranty period), or living with the creak. If all seems good but it still creaks, some people have good luck with wrapping some teflon plumber's tape around the cup threads, or applying some loctite.
Another common cause is loose crankarms. Grease the spindles and the surfaces of the mounting bolts (and the shoulder of the crank that sits up against the spindle or bearing surface), and torque the bolts to spec. While you're at it, make sure your chainring bolts are tight....take them out and grease them up if you want to (the outsides of the bolts, as well as the surfaces of the spider/rings).
If those don't fix it and the pedals seem good, you might smear a teeny bit of grease on the cleat surface of the pedal. Some pedals (especially those with aluminum cleat surfaces) creak a bit over time as they wear. Take a look at your shoes, too.....make sure the cleat bolts are snug and examine the sole for any cracks.
Don't overlook oddball stuff like the headset, cable housing ferrules, and seatpost. All of those can creak and travel through the frame making it sound like they're coming from somewhere else. If you have a carbon seatpost, use the special carbon fiber prep paste.....not normal grease. Any pro bike shop will have it and will probably smear a little on for free.
